Find Your Baby's Layer

The Lullaby Trust recommends a nursery temperature of 16-20°C (61-68°F) for safer sleep. Your baby’s layers should match the room, not the season outside.

Here is how to dress them at every temperature, from newborn to 18 months

Choose the room temperature, find the right layer.

  • 0-3 months

    Stage 1 - Newborn

    The Cool Beginning.

For the baby arriving into a heated nursery, the long winter months when the room rarely climbs above twenty.

The Tot Swaddle in 2.5 TOG, the warmest of our newborn layer. Five Tot Bodysuit Long Sleeve, enough that the laundry never feels urgent. Three Tot Suits beneath, with flip-over cuffs for the coolest nights. Two muslins for everything outside the cot. The thermometer that tells you when the room is ready.

The first weeks at home, considered.

    • 1× Tot Swaddle 2.5 TOG (0–3m)
    • 5× Tot Bodysuit Long Sleeve (0–3m)
    • 3× Tot Suit (0–3m, with flip cuffs)
    • 2× Tot Muslin
    • 1× Tot Thermometer

No loose blankets, pillows, or toys in the cot - Lullaby Trust safe sleep guidance.

  • 3-6 months

    Stage 2 - Transition

    The Cool Transition.

For the night swaddling ends, in the cooler half of the year.

Somewhere between three and five months, a baby's arms find the world. The Tot Convertible begins arms-in and ends arms-out — the same bag, week by week. When the transition is complete, the Tot Bag in 2.5 TOG continues uninterrupted, sized for cool rooms.

Three long-sleeve bodysuits beneath, two Tot Suits for the coldest nights. The hardest sleep step of the first year, met with a single bundle.

    • Long-sleeve bodysuit
    • Swaddle UP or sleeveless sleep bag

Move arms out before independent rolling

  • 6–18 months

    Stage 3 - Established

    The Cool Rhythm.

For the baby who sleeps. Six months in, the system is established — the question is no longer how, but in what.

Two Tot Bags in cool-room TOGs: 1.5 for milder evenings, 2.5 for cold ones. Three long-sleeve bodysuits in the next size, ready for a baby who has grown out of the last. Two Tot Suits, now without cuffs, with silicone grip soles for the standing weeks ahead. A fitted cot sheet to complete the environment.

The second half of the first year, prepared.

    • Bodysuit
    • Sleeveless sleep bag

    Sleep bag prevents blanket-kick wakeups.
